Small Medical Refrigerators
- (refrigerator) white goods in which food can be stored at low temperatures
- A refrigerator is a cooling apparatus. The common household appliance (often called a "fridge" for short) comprises a thermally insulated compartment and a heat pump—chemical or mechanical means—to transfer heat from it to the external environment (i.e.

Hawthorn Berry Spread (a vegan solution)
Hawthorn (Crataegus Laevigata) Berry powder: unlike many packaged for infusions this is the actual berry dried and ground without leaves or sticks and imported from Bulgaria. also this is not the specie oxycantus generally used for infusions. there you see a small pile as imported on a dish from The Carlyle, New York City.
the Waterford crystal shot glass contains a 50/50 mix of Olive and Perilla oils.
Perilla (mint family) Oil is one oil of many uses. for a long time we are told by many that fish oil is where we can get an extra hit of omega 3,6,9. for vegans this a turnoff. never once is mentioned perilla oil. for one thing it is great for frying. one can mix about 25% perilla oil to increase the flash point of an oil generally too light for frying such as olive oil or safflower and the like. perilla has about half the saturated fat of olive oil.
there are medical papers that say not to consume perilla oil if you are on blood thinners. perilla thins the blood and have read results of medical studies that state perilla oils will dissolve cholesterol buildup in arteries.
for artwork one can use it as a painting medium. bake onto metal for various coatings. the oil will polymerize easily so keep in refrigerator. never ever store in metal even stainless steel and or any ferrous group metal containing alloy such as stainless. it will polymerize that much faster. i am not a fan of those metal nozzle pour spouts for oil. if you're too lazy to open the top of a glass bottle there is no hope for you. i use old booze bottles for edible oils. i add Vitamin E at the rate of a few grams per liter to reduce spoilage by oxidation.
old equipment such as microscopes, cameras were coated with baked on perilla, urushiol or seed lac and pigment. few things will dissolve it.
after adding enough to make a nice paste consistency let it stand for a while (few hours) to get the grittiness out of the hawthorn powder. on bread, here you see it on a hand painted plate by the Everett Studio #248. the small condiment dish hand made in Italy.
at first i indicated organic so i removed that term. i do have organic and it is from Croatia. both Bulgarian and Croatian are the same specie. the one shown is Bulgarian.

JoAnna counseling a young patient. Her grandmother had given me permission to photograph her, but because of her age, I felt more comfortable informing the girl herself of what might be done with the photos and obtaining her own consent to take pictures.
Mark noted that on previous visits, the medical team was concerned with her congenital abnormalities and attempted to deduce what condition she might have. They were unable to arrive at a diagnosis but satisfied themselves that she she does not appear to be in any danger, health-wise.
Note that this home has a refrigerator. Some homes in Esfuerzo have power. In an earlier photo I commented on the probability of this power being unauthorized. Access to public utilities is inconsistent and unreliable. The squatter status of the residents is one small part of the difficulties they face in accessing the appropriate channels for addressing utilities. Other barriers to good public utility access include limited awareness of proper channels, limited options for communication, limited transportation, and limits on time/availability due to other obligations.
Also note the treadle sewing machine. I saw a similar machine in at least one other house. While I *think* treadle machines are still being manufactured in some places, these looked antique and could be up to 100 years old. I'm curious to know how long they have been in use.
